What is the purpose of the survey?
Our study aims to understand the prevalence and impact of gender-based violence (GBV) in Santa Clara County, understand what current support services are available, identify additional needs, and improve prevention and data collection efforts.
Our study will focus on diverse groups, including LGBTQ+ individuals, BIPOC communities, people with disabilities, and young people, to ensure inclusive and effective support.
Who is conducting the survey?
The Office of Gender-Based Violence Prevention has hired two research consultants who will be collaborating to facilitate the county-wide study.
- Maroon Society: Maroon Society is a Los Angeles based research organization that specializes in strategic planning and evaluating government programs. Using their technical skills and expertise, Maroon Society will be conducting our study to ensure we generate meaningful, data-driven recommendations to improve the quality of life for survivors in the county.
- Battered Women's Justice Project (BWJP): BWJP is a national legal resource dedicated to addressing gender-based violence through specialized policy and practice initiatives. BWJP will offer crucial support and subject matter expertise on trauma-informed response and an intersectional approach. Their contribution ensures equitable access and effective solutions for all survivors are prioritized.
How will data be collected?
The study will be conducted in three phases:
- Spring 2024 (in progress): Gather current data on GBV incidents in the county and support services available.
- Summer 2024: Interview and facilitate community conversations with local experts, GBV service providers, community leaders, and survivors.
- Fall 2024: Implement a survey to reach individuals impacted by GBV living in the county.
A final report with key recommendations will be released in Winter 2024.
How can I participate in the study?
Community participation is crucial for the success of this study. You can help by participating in the individual interviews, community conversations, or survey.
- Interviews: A small sample of survivors and service providers will be invited to participate in individual interviews. These discussions will deepen our understanding of the availability of resources for survivors of GBV and guide our future data collection efforts.
- Community Conversations: Community leaders and survivors will receive invitations through phone or email from one of our research agencies or community-based partners.
- Survey: Participants must be 18 years old or older and live in Santa Clara County. The survey will be open throughout the fall, and a link will be posted on this website once it's available.
How will supporting this study benefit our community and local organizations?
The findings from this study will guide current and future policies, funding, and service priorities to better support GBV survivors in Santa Clara County.
Are there other similar projects that are happening in the County?
Yes, there is a Latino Health Assessment that is being conducted by the Public Health Department. The Office of Disability Affairs is conducting a survey of families of children with disabilities. The Office of Immigrant Relations is implementing The Immigration Belong Project to collect information on the experiences of immigrants living in Santa Clara County.
